Majlis Ready To Resume Parliamentary Ties With Britain: Senior MP

Tehran, Dec 3, IRNA – Majlis (the Iranian parliament) is ready to set up parliamentary friendship group with the UK if London acts based on mutual respect and in line with the international conventions, said rapporteur of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission on Monday. Hossein Naqavi Hosseini said that British government openly interfered in 2009 sedition in Iran which shattered Tehran-London relations. At that time, Majlis reacted to Britain’s move and approved a law obliging the government to downgrade relations with the UK to the level of charge d’affaires, the lawmaker said. After the talks between officials from the two countries on the sidelines of the 68th session of UN General Assembly, the two sides decided to appoint non-resident charge d’affaires to resume diplomatic ties, Naqavi Hosseini said, adding, this level of relations is not compatible with longstanding diplomatic ties between the two nations. Meanwhile, Iran’s non-resident charge d’affaires to the UK Mohammad-Hassan Habibollahzadeh told IRNA that his British counterpart Ajay Sharma is to arrive in Tehran on Tuesday./end
