Medvedev to participate in Munich Conference

MOSCOW, February 12. /TASS/. Russia’s Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev is leaving for Munich on Friday, where he will take part in the Munich Security Conference. The prime minister will make a speech and will have meetings with Western counterparts and businesses. Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Prikhodko told reporters the prime minister on Saturday will make a speech on mechanisms of countering crisis situations (Syria, Ukraine, migration). While in Munich, Medvedev will have one-on-one meetings. His first vis-à-vis will be Finland’s President Sauli Niinisto. "Our contacts with Finnish counterparts continue, though affected by the EU sanctions (against Russia), but political contacts are rather intensive," the deputy prime minister said, adding the intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation is expected to resume its work soon. The first meeting of the commission’s co-chairs is due in St. Petersburg on March 29-30. "Our feeling is the Finnish counterparts are interested in overcoming the current stage (of complicated relations), which we have to experience not on our choice." Today, Medvedev will also have a meeting with Germany’s Foreign Minister Frank Walter-Steinmeier. "We believe, the parties will analyze the current stage of the Russia-Germany contacts, cooperation with the focus on trade and economic aspects," he said, adding Medvedev and Steinmeier would also discuss cooperation in the energy, the North Stream-2 project, humanitarian ties and, possibly, the Germany migration policies, since "we (Russia) feel indirectly its impacts." Russian delegations participate in the Munich Security Conference since the late 1990s. In 2007, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin made a speech at the Conference. Read more
