Moscow, Beijing to consolidate positive trends in situation on North Korea - Russian Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW, March 28. /TASS/ Russia and China plan to coordinate efforts to consolidate positive trends in the situation on the Korean Peninsula, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported after a meeting between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov and Chinese Ambassador to Russia Li Hui. "Further coordination of efforts between Russia and China to consolidate positive trends in the situation on the Korean Peninsula and around it was discussed," the ministry reported. There was a thaw in relations between Seoul and Pyongyang at the beginning of this year. The sides agreed to send a delegation of officials and performers from North Korea to the Winter Olympic Games in South Korea’s PyeongChang. Seoul and Washington also rescheduled their annual military exercises - Foal Eagle and Key Resolve - which usually draw irritation from Pyongyang. In early March, South Korean representatives visited Pyongyang where they met with North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un. An agreement was reached during the visit to hold a meeting of North and South Korean leaders in late April. Kim Jong-un sent an oral proposal to hold a meeting to US President Donald Trump through South Korea’s representatives, and Trump accepted it. Read more
