Moscow hosts nonproliferation conference with US attending

MOSCOW, November 21. /TASS/. The Russian capital hosts the 2014 Moscow Nonproliferation Conference that opens on Friday and brings together delegations from more than 40 countries, including from Russia, the United States, Iran, Pakistan, North Korea and Saudi Arabia. Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security Rose Gottemoeller will represent the United States. Experts see her arrival as a positive fact against the background of Ukraine developments that have affected nuclear nonproliferation cooperation between Moscow and Washington. Representatives from official delegations are expected to meet on the sidelines of the forum. “A bilateral meeting with Rose Gottemoeller is planned,” Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergy Ryabkov said. Top on the forum’s agenda will be the liquidation of Syrian chemical weapons, prospects for the settlement of a crisis over Iran’s nuclear program, the setting up of a zone free of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East, denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and the future of nonproliferation regime. The forum will run until November 22. Read more
