NAM urges nuke-disarmament

TEHRAN, May 03 (MNA) –On behalf of all NAM countries, Iran’s ambassador to IAEA called for nuke-disarmament of all nuclear powers of the world. Nuke-disarmament is a pivotal element of NPT Iranian Ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Reza Najafi said while delivering the statement of 120 countries of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) at the 2015 NPT Review Conference in Vienna. The statement calls for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons and a quick action-plan for nuclear disarmament as the top priority of all members of the Non-Aligned Movement. Underlining nuke-disarmament as a pivotal constituent of the treaty the statement stresses that the treaty is not only about countries trying to acquire nuke weapons but it is also about disarmament of nuclear weapon states who are obliged to eliminate all their nuclear arms. “The sole guarantee for not using the nuclear weapons is the elimination of them,” Najafi said referring to the advisory opinion issued by International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the use and threatened use of nuclear weapons which ruled that both are violations of international law and the nuclear powers must implement their Article VI commitments. The NPT is a landmark international treaty, opened for signature in 1968, whose objective is to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology, to promote joint action for the peaceful uses of atomic energy and to further the goal of achieving nuclear disarmament and general and complete disarmament. The Treaty, which entered into force in 1970, represents the only binding commitment in a multilateral treaty to the goal of disarmament by the nuclear-weapon States.
