NAM Warns Against Selective Approach Of UNHRC

Vienna, June 8, IRNA – Permanent Representative of Iran at Geneva UN Office Mohsen Naziri-Asl, as rotating head of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) here Friday warned against UN Human Rights approach on human rights issue. Naziri-Asl made the remark at the UN Human Rights Council Conference. Emphasizing the importance of the Non-Aligned Movement, Naziri-Asl also stressed the need for elevation, observation and implementation of the human rights in accordance with the accepted international norms, the UN Charter and the international rights system. Iranˈs representative in Geneva reiterated that NAM believes the issue of human rights must be pursued in accordance with a constructive, non-aggressive, non-political, non-selective approach based on holding dialogues, observation of justice and equality, keeping its goal-oriented, impartial, and transparent nature, in which the national sovereignty of countries would be observed, and the political, historical, social, cultural, and religious characteristics of countries at the international and UN levels would be all observed. Naziri-Asl emphasized that the important status of the UN Human Rights Council, as the foundation in charge of surveying the countriesˈ status in accordance with dialogue and constructive cooperation, and in the framework of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) should be well preserved. He said, ˈWe believe the international community must in its survey about the observation of human rights in different countries act quite indiscriminately regarding the different countries, and that it should not observe any type of discrimination between the advanced and the developing countries.ˈ The representative of Iran at the UN Geneva Office further emphasized as the rotating head of NAM over the importance of preserving the thus far achieved values of the UN Human Rights Council and the importance of that foundationˈs defending of the fundamentals of being goal-oriented, not taking sides with powers, and refraining from acting selectively and under political motivations in its surveys of the observation of the human rights in different countries, warning that if the Human Rights Council would not block the path of taking advantage of this foundation for political purposes it would have no better faith than the former Human Rights Council. Naziri-Asl expressed NAMˈs deep concern about the continuation and accelerating process of ratifying selective resolutions against countries at the UN Human Rights Council, reiterating, ˈUnfortunately this trend has become an instrument aimed at the service of taking disadvantage of the human rights issue for ensuring political interests, which is contradictory with the global nature, being goal-oriented, and non-selective objectives of this council in confrontation with the human rights issue, and would lead to no result, save for weakening the process of cooperation as the major fundamental for boosting effective support for the human rights for all./end
