Naryshkin supports discussion of North Korea’s nuclear tests in UN Security Council - MP Pushkov

MOSCOW, January 13. /TASS/. Speaker of Russia’s State Duma Sergey Naryshkin supports the need to discuss North Korea’s nuclear tests at the UN Security Council, Chairman of the State Duma lower house International Affairs Committee Alexei Pushkov told reporters on Wednesday following meeting between Naryshkin and deputy chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan Masahiko Komura. "Chairman of the State Duma supported the idea to consider this issue (North Korea’s nuclear tests) by the (UN) Security Council," Pushkov said. On January 6, Pyongyang said it had successfully tested a hydrogen bomb. The move triggered serious concern in many countries. On the same day, Uruguayan diplomat Elbio Rosselli who is the presiding officer of the UN Security Council said that the Security Council would immediately begin work on a resolution with retaliatory measures to North Korea’s nuclear tests. The resolution is expected to envisage the expansion of the existing sanctions regime against Pyongyang. Meanwhile, Russia’s Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin talking to reporters declined to give a direct answer to the question on whether Moscow would support new sanctions but expressed willingness to work on the future resolution. "It is too early to talk about this now," the diplomat said. "We have not seen the draft (resolution) yet. When we see the text, we will start working on it." Read more
