Navy Officer Succumbs To Injuries 5 Days After Targeted Attack

Islamabad, March 5, IRNA – A Pakistani Navy officer who was targeted in an attack in violence-hit Pakistani port city of Karachi on Feb 27, died of his wounds, local media reported Monday. An official navy spokesperson confirmed the death of senior navy officer Lieutenant Commander Azeem Haider who succumbed to his injuries on Monday. Lt Azeem Haider was critically injured after unidentified gunmen opened fire at his car near gate 15 of Karachi Port Trust (KPT) on February 27. According to the police, Lt Haider was shot five times and was admitted to PNS Shifa for treatment and care. He passed away while under treatment at the hospital. Security sources said it was a targeted attack on Haider and all navy officers had been informed of a possible attack earlier. Jackson police has lodged a complaint of the incident; however no suspects have been arrested yet. Targeted killings have been on the rise in Karachi. Paramilitary Force Rangers have also been given additional powers to deal with the ongoing violence and to carry out security operations./end
