No grounds to be afraid final deal with Iran might undermine UN SC mechanisms - Russian diplomat

VIENNA, May 14. /TASS/. The final agreement between Iran and the six powers will not undermine the United Nations Security Council mechanisms, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Thursday. "At the current point, we see no reasons to be afraid that the final deal might undermine in any way the competences and the authority of the United Nations Security Council," he told journalists. "It is important to keep to this position. It was also discussed in Sochi [at a meeting between Russian and U.S. foreign ministers - TASS]." "The United States’ and the European Union’s unilateral sanctions - here we are keeping an eye on the process, not interfering in it and trying to see to it that possible agreements between Iran and the United States, Iran and the European Union have nothing that could have a negative effect on our interests and our goals in the relations with Iran," Ryabkov said, adding that in what concerned United Nations Security Council sanctions Russia was playing a key role by keeping ward over the United Nations Security Council’s competences and responsibilities. "It’s us who are taking care that all the rules are observed," he noted. "Any resolution passed in line with article 7 of the United Nations Charter - and the U.N. Security Council sanctions were imposed under that chapter - must be revoked under that same chapter," he said. "It takes a separate resolution of the United Nations Security Council. It takes voting and a collective view on that. There is no automatic letting off, not automatic pulling the emergency cord. These things are too serious." Read more
