No Russian representatives at inter-Syrian talks in Moscow - Russian expert

MOSCOW, January 20. /TASS/. Russian representatives will not attend the inter-Syrian talks in Moscow on January 26-29, the director of the Institute for Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Vitaly Naumkin, said on Tuesday. Naumkin will moderate the inter-Syrian meeting in Moscow. It is not ruled out that UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura will take part in the talks, Naumkin said. “We have no representatives of fronts and parties. There are individuals. The Muslim Brotherhood is among them. I don’t say any more [about concrete participants]. Russia gives a platform and a moderator. There will be no Russian government representatives,” he said. “I don’t know what decision the Russian Foreign Ministry takes. But UN Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura has the deputy - Egyptian diplomat Ramzi Ezzedine Ramzi. If someone wishes to participate [in the talks] and if they agree with the Russian Foreign Ministry, such variant is not ruled out. But it may be a monitoring format because the dialogue is considered inter-Syrian, there will be no representatives of the government, the Foreign Ministry: there will be nobody,” Naumkin said. Some representatives of the opposition will arrive in Moscow on Sunday, he added. If the parties, which oppose each other, start talking and discussing issues, this will be a positive moment of the consultations, Naumkin said. “The second part of the success is that if they agree to continue talks," the expert said.
