Nuclear energy, an alternative source for Turkey, premier says

ISTANBUL (A.A) - November 17, 2011 - Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Thursday that nuclear energy was an alternative source for Turkey.  "Nuclear energy does not have an negative impact on climate thanks to new technologies and that's why we have focused on this energy source," said Erdogan who spoke at the opening of the Third Black Sea Energy and Economic Forum organized by the Atlantic Council in Istanbul. Turkey was a leading country in global energy relations not only as being a transit country but also as being an important consumer, he said. Recalling that despite global economic crisis, Turkey grew 9 percent in 2010 and 8.8 percent in the second quarter of 2011, Erdogan said, "we are working to make Turkey be one of the 10 largest economies of the world with 2 trillion USD national income in 2023. As parallel to this goal, we expect that Turkey's demand for energy will increase by 6-7 percent annually." Erdogan said that Turkey's energy policy was to assure security of energy supply with minimum negative impact on environment. "In this context, we have focused on development of our own energy resources and making renewable and nuclear energies widespread in the country," he said. Erdogan said that they have speeded up investments in the recent years to use all potential of renewable energy. "When we implement nuclear energy projects in the country, we will comply with the cutting edge nuclear security standards at the international level," he added.
