Obama supports Thailand on heading towards democracy: PM

MANILA, Nov 19 (TNA) -- US President Barack Obama supports Thailand in its attempt to move towards a full democratic system but is still worried on human rights violations in the country, said Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha. Gen Prayut told journalists that he had an opportunity to converse with the US leader because he was sitting next to Mr Obama while attending the 23rd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders’ summit being held in the Philippine capital on Thursday. Also, according to Gen Prayut, the US government leader said he would continue supporting Thailand on its attempt to move for a fully democratic system while the Bangkok government chief said he would try his best for Thailand to achieve a genuine and sustainable democratic system. In his response, Mr Obama said he understood Thailand’s political complexity while he was most worried about violations of human rights in the country, said Gen Prayut, adding that he had told Mr Obama that he was trying to resolve the problem.
