Official: European Court must recognize violation of Azerbaijani citizens’ rights by Armenia

Azerbaijan, Baku, Jan. 10 / Trend M. Aliyev / The European Court of Human Rights must make a decision that the Republic of Armenia is responsible for the violation of Azerbaijan's Lachin region residents' rights, Chingiz Asgarov, head of the Department for Human Rights Protection Issues in the Department for Coordination of Law Enforcement Agencies at the Presidential Administration said. He reported that the Supreme Chamber of the European Court took two decisions on January 9, recognizing that lawsuit of six Azerbaijani IDPs from Lachin against Armenia and the Armenian citizen's lawsuit against Azerbaijan as valid. The Azerbaijani citizen's complaint was submitted to the European Court in 2005. The public hearings on these complaints were held in September 2010. The decisions were taken after 16 months. "According to the decision, the Nagorno-Karabakh is a part of Azerbaijan," he said. "The Armenian armed forces occupied a part of the Azerbaijani territory. As a result, about a million people became internally displaced people. It was stated that the area of the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region hits 4,000 square kilometers. Armenia occupied twice as much the Azerbaijani territory, that is, the very area and seven adjacent regions of the country." He said that the Armenian citizen's complaint against Azerbaijan states that Azerbaijan violates his right to property. However, the Azerbaijani side says that the village of Gulistan, where the person lived, is on the contact line between the Armenian and Azerbaijani armed forces. So, Azerbaijan cannot ensure anyone's safe living in this territory. "We have presented evidence and the European Court must make a decision that the Republic of Armenia is responsible for the violation of Lachin residents' rights," he said. Do you have any feedback?
