Official: NPT Meeting Ends In New York, No Concrete Outcome

Tehran, May 10, IRNA – Foreign Ministry Director General for political and international security affairs Hamid Baeedinejad said the recent NPT meeting in New York ended with no concrete achievements. He told IRNA that the 3rd Preparatory Committee of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference held in New York April 28- May 09, 2014 wrapped up without any concrete results because the states signatory to the treaty have ˈfailed to come to any tangible recommendations for the 2015 conference despite two weeks of debates.ˈ He believed the failure of the talks was due to the ˈmajor diversity in views among the member states regarding a number of major issues under discussion, the issue of nuclear disarmament in particular. ˈWhile the countries with no nuclear weapons, led by the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), stressed the need for adopting practical measures to reduce the number of nuclear warehouses and stop modernizing operations of the nuclear arms, the nuclear-weapon states (NWS) were reluctant to take on any commitments or accept to hold any talks with the five NWS on reducing the number of nuclear weapons based on a multi-lateral agreement,ˈ Baeeidinejad argued. He further noted that other obstacles on the way the success of the NPT meeting were deep disagreement among its participants over exerting pressure on the Zionist regime to join the NPT and accept to create the Middle East region free from nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction./end
