OSCE to monitor contact line between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops

Baku, Azerbaijan, March 31 By Ilkin Izzet – Trend: It is planned to hold a monitoring Apr. 1 on the contact line of Azerbaijani and Armenian troops near the Kohanebi village of Azerbaijan’s Tovuz district under the mandate of the OSCE chairperson-in-office personal representative, said Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry Mar. 31. On the Azerbaijani side, the monitoring will be conducted by the field assistants of the personal representative of the OSCE chairperson-in-office, Yevgeny Sharov and Peter Svedberg. On the Armenian side of the contact line, the monitoring will be conducted by the field assistants of the OSCE chairperson-in-office personal representative, Irzhi Aberle, Hristo Hristov and Simon Tiller. The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.
