Pakistan Condemns Attack On Prisoner In Indian-Kashmir Jail

Islamabad, 5, IRNA – Pakistan on Friday condemned attack on a Pakistani prisoner in a jail in the Indian-administered Kashmir in an apparent retaliation for the attack on an Indian convict in a Pakistani prison. “We have learned with deep concern that a Pakistani prisoner, Sanaullah, who was serving life imprisonment in a jail in Indian occupied Kashmir, was attacked this morning and as a result has received grievous injuries,” the Foreign Ministry said. A Foreign Ministry statement said the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi has sought immediate consular access to visit Sanaullah, who is presently in hospital in Jammu and in a critical condition. The statement said that the attack on Sanaullah is retaliation for attack on Indian convict, Sarabjit Singh, in a Lahore jail, who died of wounds on Thursday. “This obvious retaliation for the death of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh is condemnable and we call upon the Government of India to take all measures to ensure that Sanaullah receives the best medical treatment available, investigate the matter thoroughly and punish the perpetrators of this atrocity,” the Foreign Ministry spokesman said. He also reminded the Indian Government of its responsibility in ensuring the safety and security of all Pakistani prisoners lodged in Indian jails. Pakistan on Thursday handed over body of Sarabjit Singh, who was airlifted to India in a special plane. Sarabjit Singh had been severely beaten by a group of Pakistani prisoners in Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore and had been admitted to a hospital, where he had been in coma since the attack on April 26. Pakistan has formed an investigation committee for the incident. The attacks on prisoners have created tension between the two uneasy neighbours as India says beating of Singh has affected relations./end
