Pakistan-France Discusses Security, Counter-terrorism

Islamabad, Dec 2, IRNA – Pakistan and France Joint Security Commission have engaged on a variety of security related subjects through formal presentations and discussions, local media reported on Saturday. According to an official communiqué issued jointly by Pakistan and France after the second round of the Joint Security Commission held here between the defence secretaries and respective delegates of the two countries, potential threats in the region were identified along with requirement for joint efforts to timely address them. The second meeting of the Commission held at the Ministry of Defense, also focused on review of progress since last meeting held in Paris on March 26-27 this year, assessment of Afghanistan situation, existing policy and implementation framework to counter terrorism and insurgency. Secretary Defence, Lt. Gen (Retd) Asif Yasin Malik and Secretary General for Defense and National Security, Republic of France, Francis Delon led respective sides. Contributions made by both countries for stability in Afghanistan and the region also came under discussion. Importantly, potential threats in the region were identified alongwith requirement for joint efforts to timely address them. Both sides exhibited strong desire and will to continue engagements and endeavor to cooperate and assist each other in the entire realm of security, where possible, as mandated by their respective governments. The meeting was also attended by French Ambassador to Pakistan Philippe Thiebaud. This Commission is in line with the implementation of joint Declaration on Security Cooperation, signed between the two countries on May 5, 2011. The Commission offers a framework for discussions on matters of security, particularly relating to fight against terrorism and prospects for security cooperation including intelligence sharing. It was decided to schedule the next meeting of the Security Commission during the first half of 2013 in Paris./end
