Palestinian-Israeli talks in Cairo must produce lasting armistice - Lavrov

MOSCOW, August 19 (Itar-Tass) - Negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis in Cairo must produce an agreement on lasting, stable armistice, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at a meeting with the chief Palestinian delegate, Palestine Liberation Organization Executive Said Arikat on Tuesday. “We are very concerned about the situation in Gaza and around it,” Lavrov said. “We have been exerting efforts to actively support Egypt’s initiative.” “The Egypt-mediated Palestinian-Israeli talks, which have been prolonged and are going on, should produce an agreement on long-term and lasting armistice,” Lavrov said. “We are certain that this goal should be a good reason for starting a comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.” Lavrov said that Russia would be working actively to this end. “We have certain ideas on that score that we would now like to exchange,” he added.
