PM to attend BRICS Summit in China

BANGKOK, Sept 3 (TNA) - Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha is scheduled to attend a two-day meeting of the Emerging Markets and Developing Counties Dialogue (EMDCD) during the 9th BRICS Summit in Xiamen, China, said a deputy government spokesman. Lieutenant General Weerachon Sukondhapatipak said the prime minister will also hold bilateral talks with Chinese president Xi Jinping and Russian president Vladimir Putin during the Summit, starting Monday. China, as chairman of BRICS this year, has invited five countries, which enjoy warm relations with the Beijing government as it guests, said Lt. Gen. Weerachon. The five countries are Thailand, Mexico, Egypt, Tajikistan and Guinea. The theme of EMDCD is ‘Strengthening Mutually-Beneficial Cooperation for Common Development’. Under this theme, two major topics including an implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and strengthening South-South cooperation and international development cooperation will be discussed. At least two agreements will be signed during the summit, he said. The agreements are trade and investment cooperation, and security cooperation, which involves exchange of information on terrorism.
