PM says not to attach to much importance to any separatist group

BANGKOK, August 29 (TNA) -- Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha asked the public not to attach to much importance to any particular separatist group, reiterating that bloody violence in deep southern Thailand has reduced. Gen Prayut told the press Friday upon returning from his official visit to the Philippines that he was informed of the outcome of peace dialogue in Malaysia between army advisory chairman Gen Aksara Kerdpol, also chief of peace negotiations with representatives of separatist movement. Gen Aksara held peace talks with representatives of separatist movement on Tuesday. The Malaysian government acted as ‘facilitator.’ On Thursday, the Pattani Syura Council or Majlis Amanah Rakyat Pattani (Mara Pattani) gave a press conference in Malaysia, demanding the Thai government to recognise the group as a legal organisation. They has also requested for immunity from criminal prosecution. Stressing that the insurgents are those breaking the law, Gen Prayut said his government was moving the right path and the government also had shown “sincerity”, therefore, the press should avoid from creating conflict. Although peace has not been fully restored in the deep South, the number of violence has reduced, said Gen Prayut. To date, more than 5,000 people have been killed by the insurgent while several thousands wounded in incidents which resumed in January 2004. (TNA)
