PM strips ousted premier Thaksin of police rank

BANGKOK, September 3 (TNA) -- Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha has signed an order stripping fugitive, ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra of his police lieutenant colonel rank while the Foreign Affairs Ministry has revoked passports of Jaturon Chaisang, a leading member of Pheu Thai Party and former education minister. Gen Prayut told reporters Thursday that he had signed the order stripping the police rank of Mr Thaksin as proposed by the Royal Thai Police. On stripping royal decoration bestowed to Mr Thaksin, the prime minister said the process would be carried out later and concerned authorities would consider it in accordance with legal procedures. Gen Prayut asked the media not to pay attention on Mr Thaksin and it was “not shocked” to strip police rank of Mr Thaksin. Ousted in a bloodless coup in September 2006, convicted former premier Thaksin left Thailand while on bail, and now lives in self-imposed exile mostly in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. In another incident, the Foreign Affairs Ministry revoked all passports of Mr Jaturon, former education minister under of the ousted government of Yingluck Shinawatra, a younger sister of Mr Thaksin. The revocation of his passports took effect from August 19 after a proposal was submitted by the Royal Thai Police. Under the proposal, the Royal Thai Police cited that Mr Jaturon failed to report to National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), inciting unrest in the country and held political talks at the Bangkok-based Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand. Meanwhile, Mr Jaturon told journalists that he had submitted a letter to Thongchai Chasawat, director-general of the Ministry’s Consular Affairs Department, requesting the latter to clarify why it has revoked his passports. Mr Jaturon said revoking a passport is certainly a major issue as it has made him a second class citizen and unable to leave the country. (TNA)
