PM is unshaken with academics' human rights complaint
BANGKOK, May 6 (TNA) -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is not concerned about some academics' claim on human right violations as the government has never abused its authority, deputy government spokesman Werachon Sukondhapatipak said.
He referred to the Thai Academic Network for Civil Rights that already filed the complaint with the UN Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights, asking the office to investigate alleged violations against the rights of opponents of the government and the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO).
The prime minister was not worried but wondered what was the real objective of the group's attempt to involve a foreign organisation in internal matters. That caused disorder and damaged the national image while security authorities were trying to create a positive atmosphere prior to the constitution referendum, Maj Gen Werachon said. He also warned such groups not to violate laws.
"We will wait and see what foreign organisations will do. However, it is good for the government to have a chance to explain to organisations because they may receive one-sided information and can be misled," the deputy government spokesman said.
"We insist that the NCPO and the government have never abused authority or tortured the accused physically or mentally," he said. (TNA)
