Polish FM Cuts Short Tehran Visit Due To Current Crimea, Ukraine Situation

Tehran, March 2, IRNA - Visiting Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said on Saturday that he cut short his visit to Tehran due to the current situation in Crimea, Ukraine. During the visit he conferred with Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on issues of mutual interests along with regional developments. The two ministers took part in a joint press conference after the meeting. Poland is closely monitoring the current developments in Ukraine, said Polish foreign minister adding that Poland is the only country which has embassy in Crimea. The Polish staff at the embassy have confirmed the presence of Russian forces in the region, he said. Sikorski expressed concern about deployment of Russian troops in Crimea and said that presence of foreign forces contravenes the international law, exacerbating the situation. Poland calls on Russia to end occupation of Ukraine as per the MoU already signed in Budapest, Hungary, he said. Sikorski said that Poland foreign ministry will release a statement about the current developments in Ukraine. ˈDue to the urgency of the current situation in Ukraine, I have to wrap up my visit to Tehran. I hope the Iranian president will pardon me and understand that to what extent the situation is serious to Poland.ˈ He expressed the hope that negotiations between Tehran and Warsaw to boost trade and pharmaceutical cooperation will bear fruits. The Islamic Republic of Iran is a very significant country in the region and it is expected relations between Tehran and the European Union would further develop, Sikorski said. He expressed hope that Iranˈs nuclear dispute would end as soon as possible. Iran will be able to persuade the international community that its nuclear program is of peaceful nature, he said.
