President Jokowi urges officers to pay heed to public voices

Semarang, Central Java, July 30 (Antara) - Indonesian President Joko Widodo has called on military (TNI) and police officers to listen to the critical voices of the public and to implement changes to make the nation better. He made the statement during a ceremony to inaugurate new TNI and police officers at the Police Academy here on Thursday. "The reform era has made our community more critical and open. To meet the constantly evolving needs, a young leader must be able to bring about changes in the location where he/she is assigned," he emphasized. President Widodo led the inauguration and swearing-in ceremony of the new officers. He affirmed that the public's critical voices should be heard for bringing about improvement. He further added that the young officers must not entrench themselves in bad practices existing in an organization. "Train members and improve their professionalism, so that you may become a great leader," he said. The president highlighted the fact that the young officers have already passed the stages of education, grooming, and training to become leaders. As a leader, he stated that one must have competence and integrity as his/her initial capital and must be on the frontline to offer motivation and set an example necessary to meet bigger challenges. He affirmed that the social dynamics of the community often change quickly while public expectations continue to rise, and the media power continues to grow in strength. "To meet the challenges, young officers must be able to immediately adapt themselves to their strategic environment at regional, national, and even global levels. You must be responsive and be able to adjust yourselves well to meet public expectations," he stated. He pointed out that as a consequence, Indonesia, a plural nation, is now facing more dynamic and complex problems in the areas of defense and security, and therefore, plurality and differences must not become the source of conflicts but must instead be used to overcome any inadequacies and serve to unify the country. In view of this, President Widodo called on the young officers from the TNI and police to be able to set good examples in promoting national unity, synergy, and harmonious cooperation and to be able to support each other in conducting their duties, which are more complex. "Do not ever get involved in conflicts and sectoral ego. Reduce friction among service members in the field, conduct close supervision, and build good communication and family spirit among the members of the TNI and police," he emphasized. He stated that as chosen men and women who have been prepared and trained well, the TNI and police officers must have a spirit of change, be close to the people, never surrender, and be ready to sacrifice for the sake of the people and nation.
