Putin, Erdogan to discuss buffer zone’s creation in northern Syria at talks - Lavrov

MOSCOW, January 16. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan will discuss at their upcoming meeting an idea of creating a 20-mile buffer zone in northern Syria, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated at his annual conference devoted to the results of 2018. "This issue will be certainly discussed also when President Erdogan arrives for another round of talks with President Putin," Lavrov said. According to the foreign minister, Moscow views this proposal in the context of the entire change in the situation in Syria, including taking into account the need for the restoration of Damascus’ control over the country’s territory as soon as possible. "We will fully strive to take into account the interests of all concerned parties, all Syria’s neighbors. And certainly, security interests of all regional states, including Turkey, will be part of the agreements, which we will pursue," he assured. Read more
