Rafsanjani: Iran Hopes To Act As Mediator To Solve Iraqˈs Internal Disputes

Tehran, June 23, IRNA – Chairman of the Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said on Sunday that Iran hopes to act as a good mediator to extinguish fire of internal disputes among Iraqi groups. Rafsanjani made the remarks in a meeting with visiting New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully in Tehran on Sunday. Current developments in Iraq are very complicated, he said adding that extremist groups have changed political norms using language of bloodshed in Iraq but Tehran tries to be a good mediator in resolving the dispute. On Iranˈs nuclear talks with the Sixtet, Rafsanjani said all Iranian officials are very serious in nuclear talks as proliferation of weapons of mass destruction is forbidden in Islamic culture. The two sides are determined to remove hurdles to this end, he said adding that it will be to the benefit of world nations to avoid political disputes and make use of huge energy resources in the region through collective contribution. Expressing regret over recent developments in the Middle East region, Rafsanjani said under such circumstances a powerful country like Iran cannot employ all its power to promote peace and stability in the entire region. Iran hosted millions of Iraqi and Afghan refuges who took shelter in the country due to domestic wars and conflicts with many of them still residing in the country, he said. Current developments and disputes in Iraq are very complicated as religious disputes have now turned into bloodshed, he said. The extremist groups as the worst terrorist group in the history has formed coalition with former members of of Baˈath party, creating a very tough situation for the Iraqi people, he said. ˈWe are not going to interfere in domestic affairs of other countries but hope to act as a good mediator to resolve the disputes,ˈ Rafsanjani said. Expansion of cooperation with New Zealand will benefit both countries, he said. The New Zealand foreign minister, for his part said Iran plays a significant role in global equations and despite long distance between the two countries ˈWe are eager to broaden relations and cooperation with the country.ˈ The two sides agreed to exchange views on broadening mutual cooperation mainly in agriculture sector after economic sanction against Iran are lifted, he said. Referring to recent developments in Iraq, he said world nations expect Iran to employ its potential to prevent continued disputes in Iraq, he pointed out.
