Regional Stability Prerequisite For Peaceful Development Of Region

Tehran, May 9, IRNA - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Martin Kobler, paid a visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran, within the framework of regional mandate of United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI). At the beginning of his stay, Kobler visited Isfahan to pay respect to the rich history and culture of Iran. In Tehran, he met with Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi and other high officials of the Iranian government, a press release issued by the UN Information Center (UNIC) said here on Wednesday. Kobler discussed matters pertaining to the peaceful development and stability of the region. The United Nations continues to provide technical assistance, at the request of both governments, on issues such as combating sandstorms, demining and water management. “Iran is a very important actor in this region”, Kobler said. “I have come to Tehran to hear the views of the Government of Iran regarding issues of importance to Iraq and Iran and to discuss how UNAMI can still better support efforts by both countries to fulfill UNAMI’s regional mandate. These discussions have been very constructive and fruitful. I thank the Government of Iran for its kind hospitality. I am very grateful for the support extended to UNAMI by the Iranian Government.” Kobler of Germany was officially appointed by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as his Special Representative for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq on August 11, 2011. Prior to his assignment in Iraq, Kobler served as Deputy Special Representative (Political) for Afghanistan./end
