RI Reelected As Member Of U.N Human Rights Council

Jakarta, Oct 22 (Antara) - Indonesia gets reelected as the UN Human Rights Council member for 2015-2017 period representing the Asia-Pacific region, noted a press release from Indonesia`s Permanent Representative to the UN office, New York, received here on Wednesday. "This proves that the international community believes in Indonesia`s efforts to promote and protect human rights. We also consider this reelection as a support for Indonesia that has just inaugurated its new president," stated Indonesian Ambassador to the UN office in New York Desra Percaya. During the recently held election process, Indonesia along with Bangladesh and Qatar were elected to represent the Asia-Pacific region at the UN Human Rights Council. In the meantime, Botswana, Republic of Congo, Ghana, and Nigeria were also elected to the council representing the African region followed by Albania and Latvia from Eastern Europe; the Netherland and Portugal for Western Europe; and El Salvador, Bolivia, and Paraguay for Latin America and the Caribbean group. Indonesia itself has been a member of the UN Human Rights Council since 2006. This is the fourth time that Indonesia has been reelected as a member. "In the future, we will be facing a challenge to continue to promote and protect human rights at the national level while also contributing to the region and the international community," remarked Ambassador Desra. The UN Human Rights Council is an inter-governmental body within the UN that works towards strengthening efforts to promote and protect human rights in the world. Established since 2006, the council comprises 47 member countries.
