Russia and Turkey set good example to other countries - Naryshkin

ISTANBUL, April 23 /TASS/. Modern relations between Russia and Turkey may be a good example for other countries, Sergei Naryshkin, the speaker of the Russian State Duma lower house of parliament, said on Thursday. "Today’s relations between Russia and Turkey which fought on the opposite sides of the frontline during World War One a hundred years ago are setting a good example to other countries nowadays," Naryshkin told "The First World War - 100 Years After" academic conference in Istanbul. "Historical memory strengthens the wisdom of state leaders and increases the responsibility of political parties and public movements; it helps people in their striving to make the world better and safer and the life of every person more decent," Naryshkin said in his speech. The Russian State Duma speaker also said that this year would see the 95th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Turkey. "Ninety-five years ago, on June 3, the leaders of Turkey and Soviet Russia decided to establish diplomatic relations at the turning point in the history of both states and extended a helping hand to each other," Naryshkin said adding that the traditions of friendship and cooperation that were laid down at that time were still alive. "Our countries hold close approaches to many global and regional problems; expand contacts in education, science, culture, art and tourism," the Russian State Duma speaker explained. Turkey is one of Russia’s leading economic partners and both countries’ energy interaction has reached a "truly strategic level," Naryshkin stressed. "A global megaproject like the Turkish Stream will guarantee the energy security of Turkey and the whole Europe for decades to come," Naryshkin, who is on a working visit to Turkey on April 22-24, said. He is attending commemorations devoted to the 100 anniversary of the 1915 Dardanelles Campaign. Read more
