Russia, Azerbaijan agree on equal use of Samur River water

Baku, December 9 (AzerTAc). A joint Azerbaijan-Russian commission has decided that water resources of the trans-border Samur River will be equally used between the two countries. The commission convened in Derbend. Speaking to the meeting, deputy chairman of Dagestan`s government Rizvan Gazimagomedov expressed hope “the decisions adopted during our gathering will serve to strengthening our good-neighborhood and brotherly relations”. Deputy chief of Azerbaijan Melioration and Water Industry company, co-chairman of the commission Zakir Guliyev said: “The Samur River is of great importance for both Azerbaijan and Russia.” “Today we must outline the goals and objectives of our future collaboration,” he added. In an interview with journalists following the meeting, deputy head of Russia`s Federal Agency for Water Resources, the commission`s co-chairman Vadim Nikanorov said “our major aim is to organize the joint working group`s activity in such a manner that all issues related to the distribution of water resources of the Samur River are dealt with justly and in accordance with the international practice”. The commission decided to convene two times a year. The commission`s working group will be responsible for the quality of the river`s water.
