Russia calling for immediate resumption of political dialogue with Yemen

UNITED NATIONS, April 28. /TASS/. Russia speaks for an earliest possible resumption of political dialogue between the Yemeni government and the Houthi Shiite rebel forces, the Russian ambassador to the UN, Vitaly Churkin said on Monday. He voiced the hope the UN would exert a powerful political pressure on the parties to the conflict in Yemen so as to prompt them to return to the table of negotiations. "We're speaking for a resumption of political contacts at an earliest possible data," he said. "I hope most of the parties are ready for this and that's why I hope a powerful political pressure on behalf of Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and his new special envoy (for Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed -- TASS) is possible, too," Churkin said upon the end of a meeting of the UN Security Council behind closed doors. Former envoy for Yemen, Jamal Benomar of Morocco who has quitted the position, made his last report to the Security Council members. He told newsmen after it that the Yemeni government and the Houthi rebels had been close to settlement of the crisis and had started discussing a future rule for President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi when Saudi Arabia intervened with the bombing raids. Benomar resigned in mid-April. Media reports indicate that he lost support of Saudia Arabia and the Persian Gulf monarchies in recent months, as they had become discontent with what they viewed as his overly active communication with the Houthis. Saudi Air Force that drew on support from the Air Forces of Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates launched Operation Decisive Storm against the Houthi movement Ansarullah, which had established control over considerable territories in Yemen, on March 26. They did it upon a request from President Hadi, whose term of office expired in February. UN agencies say hundreds of civilians have died as a result of the strikes and numerous civilian facilities have been destroyed. Read more
