Russia can play key role in resolving Libya crisis — Italian PM

MOSCOW, 5 March. /TASS/. Italy’s Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has said that Russia can play a decisive role in resolving the Libya crisis and in the fight against terrorism. Speaking to reporters after talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Renzi said that the Libya crisis and a threat of the spread of terrorism and extremism were on the table among other issues. "We agreed that our countries should help boost efforts in that direction," Renzi said adding that "Russia’s role in the UN Security Council is of crucial importance and besides, Russia’s ties with Egypt could help." "The point is that we should join efforts to fend off those who infringe on basic values of our civilizations," Renzi said. "I am speaking about terrorism and religious fanaticism as these problems is a matter of concern for our countries." "I am confident that the Russian Federation may play a decisive role in resolving the problem," Renzi said. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia calls for a peaceful resolution of Libya’s crisis. "We have discussed a terrorist threat that comes from the regions in Middle East and North Africa, in particular a sharp deterioration of the situation in close vicinity of Italy - in Libya," Putin said adding that "Russia urges a peaceful resolution of the Libya crisis and supports the UN mediatory efforts to the effect."
