Russia, China cooperate over Korean issue but denuclearization is stagnant - diplomat

BEIJING, August 27. /TASS/. Russia and China coordinate their stances on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, but the process of resolving the issue is stagnant, Russia’s ambassador to China, Andrei Denisov, told a joint news conference with China’s Deputy Foreign Minister Cheng Goping. "As far as Russian-Chinese cooperation over the Korean Peninsula’s nuclear problem is concerned, it is very tight and going on. We see eye to eye regarding the ways of handing this international issue," Denisov said. "Regrettably, the Korean problem at the moment is stagnant and there have been no breakthroughs." "The Korean problem, the way I understand it, has two aspects. One aspect, the narrower one, is North Korea’s nuclear problem as such. The other, and to my mind far more wider and important, is that of maintaining peace and security in the whole region of Southeast Asia," Denisov said. "While the purely nuclear problem is stagnant, coordination of efforts by China and Russia play an exceptionally fruitful role for the sake of maintaining stability in the whole region of Northeast Asia.
