Russia considers draft resolution on Yemen submitted to UN Security Council

UNITED NATIONS, March 27. /TASS/. Russia’s permanent mission at the United Nations has received a draft resolution on Yemen submitted to the UN Security Council by the Persian Gulf states and at present is considering it, the mission’s spokesman told TASS on Thursday. "There appeared a draft [resolution] of the Persian Gulf countries and we are considering it," Alexei Zaitsev said. Earlier, Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to the UN Abdallah al-Mouallimi said he had handed the letter notifying about the launch of military operation against rebels in Yemen to the French diplomat, Francois Delattre. Also, he had meetings with the SC member countries’ diplomats, including Russia and China, discussing the draft resolution on Yemen. Al-Mouallimi said that the document approves the military operation and envisages an embargo on weapons supplies to the Houthis /Shiite rebels supporters of the Ansar Allah movement/. At the same time, the Saudi diplomat did not elaborate on the date when the document would be submitted for voting. Jordan’s Ambassador to the UN Dina Kawar told reporters that the issue could be clarified after the summit of the Arab League due to be held on March 28 to 29 in Sharm el-Sheikh. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is to take part in the summit. He is also expected to meet with a high-ranking Saudi official, Ban Ki-moon's deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq told TASS. It may be King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud or Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal. In early hours of Thursday, the Saudi Air Forces launched a military operation against the Houthis in Yemen, drawing on support from the Air Forces of Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates.
