Russia, Iran together may stabilize situation in Central Asia, Middle East - Russian lawmaker

MOSCOW, April 13. /TASS/. Russia and Iran together can stabilize the situation in Central Asia and Middle East, Russian State Duma’s Committee on International Affairs chairman Alexey Pushkov said on Monday after talks with Chairman for the Committee for Foreign Policy and National Security of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran Alaeddin Boroujerdi. "Iran will not try to disrupt the prospects of this agreement," the lawmaker said. "We share similar approaches to regional security with Iran, a very influential, serious country whose role has been increasing over the last years," Pushkov said. "Russia and Iran together, I think, may play a very positive role from the point of view of region’s stabilization," he added. Since the 2001 war in Iraq, the region is marred by constant instability, Pushkov noted. "Some time ago, the US called this region an ‘arc of instability’ - from the Middle East to Pakistan, and now it is an arc of continuous wars," Pushkov said. "From Libya to Pakistan, there is a war in Libya, war in Yemen, military actions in Syria, in Iraq, there is a very unstable situation in Pakistan," the lawmaker noted. "This is an ‘arc of constant wars’, and it is necessary to look for ways out," Pushkov said. Russia has repeatedly warned that supporting "color revolutions," interfering into the internal matters in the region, and staging coups "leads only to chaos and losing control over the course of events," the lawmaker said.
