Russia, Japan diplomats in consultations on peace treaty

MOSCOW, October 8. /TASS/. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov and his Japanese counterpart Shinsuke Sugiyama are holding a next round of consultations on a peace treaty, under an agreement of the two countries’ foreign ministers at a meeting in Moscow on September 21. The consultations are held behind closed doors. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said earlier that differences in stances on a peace treaty were still big, noting however, that Moscow and Tokyo intended "to seek solutions that would be acceptable and supported by the peoples of our countries". "Russian approaches base on all agreements reached by the present day and remain unchanging," the foreign minister said. At talks in April 2013, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed to speed up work on a peace treaty, giving instructions to their foreign ministers. The previous round of deputy foreign ministerial talks was held in Tokyo in January 2014. Since then, new consultations were repeatedly postponed. Moscow said the pause was not coming from the Russian side. Read more
