Russia praises results of presidential elections in Syria

SOCHI, October 24. /TASS/. Russia praises the results of presidential elections in Syria, Russian Vice-Premier Dmitry Rogozin said on Friday. Russia believes that the election results have a positive impact on security in the region, he said at narrow-format talks with the Syrian delegation. Russia renders all-round support for the Syrian people in its struggle for peace and security, Rogozin said. He again expressed congratulations to the newly elected president, Bashar al-Assad. “We give a high assessment to the results of the recent elections in Syria with the Syrian people’s broad support for the presidential elections. We have to show surprise at how one could hold the elections of such scale under relative security amid the hardships, amid the struggle, the severe struggle for the country’s sovereignty despite the attempts to undermine the elections,” Rogozin said. The election results positively influence the strengthening of security on the Syrian land, he said. The first alternative presidential elections were held in Syria on June 3. The Supreme Constitutional Court admitted three candidates. Incumbent President Bashar al-Assad won the victory in the elections with 88.7 percent of the vote. Read related news on tass.ru
