Russia is prepared to discuss UN reform but against shaking loose its authority - Putin

UNITED NATIONS, September 28. /TASS/. Russia is prepared to discuss plans for reforming the United Nations, but it is against shaking loose the organization’s authority, Russian President Vladimir Putin told the UN General Assembly session. He pointed to speculations the organization the way it was conceived had gone irrelevant and already accomplished its historical mission. "Of course, the world is changing and the United Nations should be adequate to that natural transformation," Putin acknowledged. "Russia on the basis of a wide consensus is prepared for that work to further develop the United Nations in cooperation with all of its partners. But we believe that the attempts to shake loose the authority and legitimacy of the United Nations are extremely dangerous," the Russian leader said. He warned that such attempts might ruin the entire edifice of international relations and then "we will see no rules left other than ‘might makes right’." "It will be a world where instead of collective work egoism will enjoy supremacy. It will be a world where there will be ever more dictating and ever less equality, less real democracy and freedom. A world where instead of genuinely independent states there will be multiplying the number of protectorates and territories ruled from outside," Putin said. Read more
