Russia ready to back resolution on Palestine in UN Security Council - UN ambassador

THE UNITED NATIONS, December 19. /TASS/. Russian Permanent Representative in the UN Vitaly Churkin told media that Russia is ready to support a draft resolution moved in the UN Security Council to establish a Palestinian state. “The text is good. I believe that we will certainly support it,” he said on Thursday. The diplomat noted that the date to consider the document was not set yet and authors of the draft resolution “will have to decide whether they are ready to put it up for vote or not.” The Jordan-brokered draft resolution gives 12 months for comprehensive settlement of Palestinian-Israeli conflict which envisages the founding of “a sovereign and viable” State of Palestine. The document a copy of which was transmitted to TASS also said that all Israeli forces should leave occupied territories not later than in 2017. Palestinian Permanent Observer in the UN Riyad Mansour said earlier that the draft resolution submitted for consideration in the UN Security Council “does not shut the door for continued talks between all partners, efforts of which we respect.” Several years ago Russia suggested convening a Moscow conference involving Israelis and Palestinians and now France began saying that this meeting is needed, Vitaly Churkin noted. “I do not believe that they referred to a Moscow conference. But more or less this is some comeback to Russian initiative,” the Russian ambassador said. Read more
