Russia stands against restriction of veto right in UN Security Council - diplomat

MOSCOW, April 2. /TASS/. Moscow speaks against the French-proposed initiative to limit of the use of veto by the UN Security Council’s five permanent members, which besides Russia and France include China, the United States and Britain, Alexander Lukashevich, a spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said on Thursday. The French initiative proposes that the five permanent UN Security Council member states should voluntarily refrain from resorting to their right of veto when they deal with issues of mass-atrocity crimes. France stepped up its calls for the restriction of the veto use ahead of this year’s commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the United Nations. "This issue had been repeatedly put forward," Lukashevich said. "The right to veto of the current permanent members of the UN Security Council cannot be limited and it is stipulated by the UN charters." The diplomat said Moscow "does not understand what exactly ‘the limitation of veto’ means," adding that he also did not know how this issue would be discussed at the anniversary UN General Assembly session.
