Russia starts working on UN Security Council resolution on chemical attacks in Iraq - Churkin

UNITED NATIONS, August 31 /TASS/. Russia starts working on United Nations Security Council resolution that will allow international investigation into reported cases of chemical attacks, which the Islamic State (IS) militants had staged in Iraq, Russia’s Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said on Monday. On August 7, the United Nations Security Council unanimously passed resolution 2235 on creation jointly with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons of mechanisms for exposing persons guilty of launching chemical attacks during the conflict in Syria. Churkin said some reports that followed the 2235 resolution said that the Islamic State was increasingly using toxic chemical agents in neighboring Iraq. Churkin said other U.N. Security Council members had reacted normally to the Russian proposal to adopt a resolution on chemical attacks in Iraq. Read more
