Russia to stay away from Libyan scenario in Syria - Russian foreign ministry

MOSCOW, October 6. /TASS/. A Libyan scenario if implemented in Syria will lead to much graver consequences, which is why Russia prefers to stay away from it, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Tuesday. Commenting on allegations of illegitimacy of the Syrian government, she asked to demonstrate any international document that might prove that. "As far as I understand, there is no such document," she stressed. She said Moscow was absolutely realistic about what was going on in Syria. "The question is what would be when the regime is toppled by force, which many Western leaders, who, by the way, signed the Geneva communique, are calling for," Zakharova said, adding that the Geneva communique had it that any changes in Syria were to take place only through national accord. "What we are saying is this, let us first do away with the Islamic State and then launch political process," she said. "We are fully aware that this is a multifaceted issues. But if we are being pushed towards the Libyan scenario, I beg your pardon, we are not in, since Syria would explode much louder than Libya." Read more
