Russia welcomes breakthrough agreements on Iranian nuclear program - defense minister

MOSCOW, April 16. /TASS/. Russia welcomes agreements on the Iranian nuclear program reached in Switzerland’s Lausanne between Tehran and the Sextet of international mediators, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said on Thursday at a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Dehghan in the framework of the 4th Moscow Conference on International Security. Shoigu said Moscow considers the constructive development of Russian-Iranian relations an important factor of ensuring international security. "We positively assess the breakthrough agreements on the Iranian nuclear program reached in Lausanne," the defense minister said. "The development of constructive relations between Russia and Iran are an important factor of ensuring international security and regional stability," he added. Shoigu stressed that he values his contacts with the Iranian colleague which have become traditional. "We welcome the Iranian leadership’s intentions to expand ties with Russian in all spheres, including in defense," he said. Agreement on Iran’s nuclear program On April 2, Iran and P5+1 group (Russia, US, UK, China, France and Germany) reached a breakthrough agreement in Switzerland’s Lausanne on restricting Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for gradual lifting of sanctions. The deadline for coordinating the final agreement is June 30. According to the deal, Iran will not enrich uranium no higher than to 3.67 percent for the next 15 years. Tehran will also cut its stockpile of low-enriched uranium from around 10 tons to 300 kilograms. Iran agreed not to set up new facilities for uranium enrichment in the next 15 years, and vowed not to reprocess spent nuclear fuel and conduct research in this sphere. Read more
