Russian ambassador fears crisis in Yemen may repeat Libyan scenario

MOSCOW, February 8. /TASS/. The situation unfolding in Yemen may repeat the Libyan scenario, in which two governments and two parliaments exist in the country, Russian Ambassador to Yemen Vladimir Dedushkin said on Monday. "Unfortunately, the scenario with two governments cannot be ruled out," the diplomat said. "Houthis have to solve administrative and economic issues in conditions of a continued war that is accompanied with numerous casualties and humanitarian disaster (the UN puts the death toll at 8,100, the number of wounded people at 20,000, internally displaced persons at 2.3 million, and those in need of humanitarian aid at 21 million)," he said. "They are thinking in earnest about forming separate government agencies and holding elections outside the framework of political process," Dedushkin added. "Such unilateral moves, the logic of which is understandable on the whole, can only draw tighter the knot of contradictions," the ambassador said. "At the same time, another thing is also understandable: it is necessary to settle as soon as possible a grave economic crisis in the Republic of Yemen, worsening against the background of foreign military interference and blockade," he added. He said the country could be facing the fate of Syria, Iraq and Libya. "Yemen is close to this dangerous threshold as never before, if it has not crossed it already," he added. "The war must be stopped immediately. This can be achieved solely through political will demonstrated by Yemenis themselves, and also outside players involved in the conflict - first of all Yemen’s neighbours, in particular Saudi Arabia," he went on. "It is time for all to understand that there won’t be winners in this war, as there could not be from the very start. There is no simply no other basis for the settlement except from the well-known principle ‘no winners no defeated’ even if many would not like it, the diplomat said. "It is important to do all to break the circle of violence in the Republic of Yemen and achieve a long-awaited peace in this friendly to us country through an inclusive dialog, taking into consideration the interests of all people of Yemen," he added.
