Russian foreign minister calls to pool int’l efforts to counteract terrorism

MOSCOW, June 29. /TASS/. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday called to pool international efforts to counteract terrorist threats. "It is a topical task, bearing in mind the scales of the activity of the Islamic State and its accomplices. The Syrians do not have enough strength to address this threat," Lavroc said after talks with his Syrian counterpart Walid Moualem. "We call on all countries to coordinate anti-terrorist efforts. Naturally, it doesn’t mean we are putting aside those provisions of the communique that provide for the establishment of political dialogue between all Syrian groups." In the past two years, Russia "has been insisting that the Geneva communique that was adopted at our initiative should not be just a paper," Lavrov said. "In the long run, it was approved, although it took quite a time. Our Western partners were reluctant to do that. Later on, we did our best to contribute to the negotiating process, we organized two meetings in Moscow. These meetings helped to agree common approaches to ensure the right of all ethnic and religious groups. We want to continue to help Syria to spell out in detail the approaches laid down in these principles." "To promote this process, we will be ready to look at a possibility to organize a third meeting in Moscow," the Russian foreign minister said. "We spoke about that with the [Syrian foreign] minister. All this is meant to help the United Nations envoy to form a basis for the negotiating process which can be only comprehensive, involving all Syrian groups without exception." "The solid basis is the Geneva communique of June 30, 2012," he stressed. "Obviously, bearing in mind the unprecedented growth of terrorist threat, this problem needs closer attention. We hope de Mistura will do that." "The task for the international community - Syria’s neighbours, Europeans, Russia, the United Nations - is not to seek to impose anything on the Syrians but to create conditions for an inclusive dialogue needed to finally reach accord," Lavrov said.
