Russian, Indian foreign ministers discuss broader bilateral cooperation

BEIJING, February 2. /TASS/. Broader bilateral cooperation in various spheres and joint efforts to strengthen security in the world were under negotiation on Monday as Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj in the Chinese capital. Indian Deputy Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar told journalists that during the meeting that lasted more than an hour, Lavrov and Swaraj discussed implementation of provisions contained in a joint statement named Druzhba-Dosti. The document laying the foundation for strengthening India-Russia partnership over the next decade was signed during a visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to India last December. The foreign ministers also considered "further development of Russian-Indian projects in energy, technology and innovation, broader economic cooperation alongside joint efforts to maintain order and peace in the world", Jaishankar said. The negotiatons took place on the eve of the Russia-India-China ministerial meeting, due to be held on Monday evening. The foreign ministers of the three countries will discuss a wide range of current foreign policy problems. The Russia-India-China trilateral cooperation format was initiated by Moscow in 1998 and launched on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly sessions in 2003-2005. The trilateral cooperation currently covers industry, trade, agriculture, emergency relief, healthcare and formation of a joint knowledge bank. Read more
