Russian, Japanese senior diplomats to discuss peace treaty

TOKYO, March 18. /TASS/. Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Morgulov and his Japanese counterpart Takeo Mori will hold a new round of talks to discuss the issue of a peace treaty between Russia and Japan on March 21 in Moscow, the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday. Japan’s Foreign Ministry also added that a regular Japanese-Russian meeting on security will also take place in Moscow on March 22 to be attended by Takeo Mori and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov. The spotlight of these talks will focus on cooperation regarding regional and national security. Since the mid-20th century, Russia and Japan have been holding consultations in order to clinch a peace treaty as a follow-up to World War II. In November 2018, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed that the two countries would accelerate the pace of the peace negotiations based on the 1956 Joint Declaration.
