Russian parliament adopts law ordering personal data is stored on Russian servers

MOSCOW, July 4 (Itar-Tass) - The State Duma has adopted legal changes regarding regulations for the work on the Internet, where foreign companies, which have mail services, social networks and search engines are to keep Russian users’ personal data from September 1, 2016 on servers in Russia only. Electronic mail addresses and letters will also make personal data. The document reads “while collecting personal data, including by means of the Internet, an operator should provide recording, systematisation, storage and update of the Russian citizen’s personal data with use of the databases located in the territory of the Russian Federation.” The bill offers certain sanctions. For example, domain names or net addresses which do not comply with the regulations will be put on a special registrar of those breaching rights of personal data subjects. Breaching the law will cause limitation of access to the information resource. Learn more on itar-tass.com
