SCO as a structure is beyond the initial borders and objectives, as it is organisation of demand - Putin

MOSCOW, December 18. /TASS/. The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) as a structure is now beyond its initial orders and objectives, as it is an organisation of demand, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin told an annual news conference on Thursday. “This structure has developed beyond the initial borders - in the virtual sense,” he said. “It is beyond the objectives which were at time it was organised.” This is explained by the fact the Organisation is of high demand, Putin said. “The international community and the SCO member countries realised they are interested in further joint work,” the president said. Putin mentioned countries, which have expressed interest in cooperation in the framework of the Organisation - Iran, Pakistan, India and others, who are observers now. SCO has been considering already applications from Pakistan and India for the right to become “permanent and full-fledged members of the Organisation.” The president said initially SCO was organised as “a structure for settlement of border questions after the collapse of the Soviet Union - between China and former Soviet republics.” “In this part, the organisation was very efficient,” Putin said. “We were not disappointed with each other, though we had many questions, but all of them were settled on the basis of interests of China and other SCO members.” Read more
