Security at Thai-Malaysian border boosted ahead of Malaysia election

BANGKOK, May 1 (TNA) - Thai soldiers are imposing security measures on the border with Malaysia ahead of the Malaysia general election this weekend. Military rangers, customs and immigration officers in Yala’s Betong district held a meeting to discuss security measures in response to Malaysia’s announcement to seal off the border between April 20 and May 6 for security reasons. According to officials, the Malaysian authorities are screening out Thai persons who hold dual-citizenship from casting their votes in the Sunday election. Kelantan, Perak and Terengganu are regarded as battle ground states where the main opposition party Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) enjoys strong support. During the election period, Thai security agencies are to provide full cooperation with their Malaysian counterparts in patrolling the border and ensuring border security. Thai News Agency reporter in Yala reported that Malaysian police had announced a strict safety measures for the upcoming election to allow smooth and safe polling environment by deploying over 100,000 policemen.
